As we begin a new school year and welcome the class of 2011, I want to focus on leadership. The mission of The Citadel reads as follows: The Citadel's mission is to educate and prepare graduates to become principled leaders in all walks of life by instilling the core values of The Citadel in a challenging intellectual environment.
South Carolina Cadet Medal of Merit Cadet Capt. Douglas J. Schmid, Political Science major and a native of Arlington, Wisconsin, was awarded the South Carolina Cadet Medal of Merit, by the adjutant general of South Carolina.For the second year in a row, Assistant Professors Jason Solinger and Sean Heuston of the English Department coordinated and co-directed The Citadel's Summer in London Program, a six-week study-abroad program open to Citadel students and students from other area colleges and universities.Several members of the Department of History engaged in special projects and research over the summer.The spring 2007 issue of El Cid, the national refereed journal of The Citadel's chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, was published online on May 20.Cadet Douglas Schmid was presented with the CFAF/Colonel Myron C. Harrington Award by Jim Hodges, Charleston Foreign Affairs Forum president.Dr. Steve Nida delivered a paper presentation titled, “Time-Out: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature” at the 79th Annual Midwestern Psychological Association Meeting in Chicago, IL on May 3 - 5, 2007.
